Review by Edie Stokes
Tucked into a rustic corner of Ridgefield, only 10 minutes by car away from this area, is a quaint 'ristorante', combining old world charm, as well as older world prices. You don't have to rush out of your homes at 6:00 p.m. to make an early-bird special, because served at all times is a four-course dinner with a glass of wine for $13.95.Frank Stancato, the owner, has become successful the hard way. In 1968, he and his brother opened a pizzeria in Ridgefield. Then they opened a North Bergen tavern called Guido's, which later became the well-known restaurant, Stancato's. Unable to stay away, Frank landed in the same place he started, Ridgefield. He bought the 533 Club, where he began his Cafe Tivoli.
The food is tasty and the portions are ample. Listed under 'traditional old favorites' are eggplant parmigiana, veal parmigiana and lasagne--all priced at $8.00 or $9.00. These meals are served with a rather large salad. I especially enjoyed the blue cheese dressing--on the side, of course. Being health minded, I ordered a side of steamed vegetables instead of pasta (I know, I know--but I like them). They brought out a steaming dish of string beans, cauliflower, and zucchini--delicious!
Since this is a family-type restaurant, and some may prefer lighter fare, there is a 'tuna salad Italiano' and a chef salad. Each is about $6.00. Among the desserts are the usual favorites--tortoni, spumoni and just plain ice cream.
The service is personal. Members of the family join in to serve the customers. Several of the waitresses have been with the Stancato family for over 20 years.
Although the location is near, at 533 Shaler Blvd., I feel very removed from the noise and bustle of our town when I dine at the 'Cafe Tiv', as it's often called.
The name 'Tivoli' was taken from the ancient villa near Rome, where the Pope would take his vacations. It dates back to the 16th century. And so 'Arrivederci Roma'. Enjoy!
And now for news of a 'Green Kitchen' favorite--or, whatever happened to Ali?--He opened his own restaurant, which is well worth investigating. The food is very tasty. Compliments to the chef, Arturo. There are many choices, ranging from the catch of the day to lighter fare. Prices are reasonable.
The eatery is in the back of the 'Wild Rover Pub' at 7103 Park Avenue in Guttenberg. Look in and say, "Hi." You will be happy that you did.
